Brotherly Love

cashier: Oh wow, you two look so much alike. You must be siblings.
me: Nope. We're husband and wife though. So that's not creepy.
cashier: Oh, uh. Well, they say significant others start to look more and more alike as time goes on...
me: So they say.

Maybe it was due to the fact that we both have dark hair and that Mike was wearing his glasses at the time that the guy thought we looked alike. We've heard the sibling comparison once before. I've heard the look alike over time thing too, but really, it's just on the icky side of things no matter when you hear it.

Hair Raising

This was my hair right before 3 pm yesterday:
The ends fall right above the R of my Panthers shirt, a few inches past my collarbone.
And this is my hair now:
SHORT!
I'm donating it again to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, making this my 4th time donating overall. Every time I cut it, I get just a little nervous, but then I swing my new short hair around and remember that I like having short hair. And as a bonus I don't have to take care of long hair anymore and I just cut my drying time in half!

Yay new hair!

Chapstick

So, my bridal party was probably one of the weirdest bridal parties the salon had ever had.
  • reason 1: I didn't want any glitter anywhere on my face, near me, or my posse. My bridal portraits/trial makeup run, the makeup artist used a glitter eyeshadow at first, which was just not me. And you don't want glitter/shiny makeup that day anyway because it can photograph weird.  And my face was just too "done" for the portraits. (in fairness to my makeup artist, I didn't have a good idea of what I wanted, and it's not her fault she couldn't create something in my head that I couldn't even explain) So wedding day, I brought my own makeup (with no sparkles), and (honestly) loved the results.
  • reason 2: I was not a picky bride in the slightest. With the exception of the dress color and skirt length, I didn't dictate what anyone's look should be in general. When it came to hair and makeup, I didn't care what anyone did or didn't do, as long as they were happy with the result.  If they wanted an updo, they could have an updo. If they wanted down, that was cool with me.  I guess they are used to brides who want everyone to look the same so that the bride stands out more, but I figured my big white dress and overall giddiness would be enough for people to know who I was.
  • reason 3: We had to convince my mom to get her makeup done in the first place. So when she was done with her hairstylist and came into the makeup area, my sister and I both squealed with surprise and delight that she had an updo. (as far as I remember, my mom has never had an updo. I don't think I've ever even seen her with a ponytail)  She was so cute!  But she was thinking that she would do her makeup at home. I love my mom very much, but she doesn't do her own makeup well. (a good place to start would be if bought makeup that worked with her skin tone, and didn't just use whatever random stuff my sister and I have left behind) And this was a big event for her too (mother of the bride and all that business), and she had every right to go a little fancier than normal.  So after my sister and I told her to "just get a little something done," and the makeup artist said with fancy hair you need fancy makeup, she got her makeup done. Of course, having to convince her to get her makeup done in the first place, means she understated what she wanted makeup wise.
  • reason 4: We all super understated what we wanted. I warned my posse about trial makeup, so we were all a little wary of how heavy they put makeup on. We all know that you can always add, but taking away/toning down is much much harder.  Plus Priya and Jeanne had a male makeup artist who had a full face of makeup on himself.  And, while his makeup was beautiful, gay man logic implies our idea of full face of makeup was about 14 levels below of what his idea of full face makeup was.  You could tell all the makeup artist were reigning themselves in and tampering their own version of done, but the end result is that everyone liked what they had.
  • reason 5: LB doesn't wear lipstick.  She doesn't wear a lot of makeup in general, and when it came time to put the lipstick, the makeup artist was at a slight loss.
    • makeup artist: what do you wear on your lips?
    • lb: chapsick.
    • makeup artist: seriously?
    • lb: yes
    • makeup artist: Wow, that's a new one. We've heard 'clear,' or 'gloss' and even 'tinted lip balm'. But chapstick is a new one. That's going on our facebook page.
So yeah, we were a very odd bridal party to them I bet. But the end result was that everyone looked great, everyone was happy with what they got done, and the day was fabulous!
See? We all look so pretty!
And I think I stand out pretty well if I do say so for myself

Protect Me

I was getting a pedicure at Aveda before the wedding and the girl doing my nails was chatting like you do.  When she asked if the pedicure was for a special occasion, I (of course) said I'm getting married that Saturday.

Now, when you say the magic W word to a (very young) 20 something year old girl, they typically start pressing you for any details and gushing over them.  And if they've been with their boyfriend for a year or two more, they will also, quite typically, tell you that they have discussed marriage with their boyfriend and that he is the one.* I know at her age, I was the same way,** so I didn't scoff. (no really, I didn't) And besides the girl was sweet and I didn't mind chatting about the wedding with her.

This girl though, seemed to have a fairly decent head on her shoulders, and wasn't rushing to take the marriage plunge or pressuring her boyfriend either. She admitted that there were a few things that made her unsure.  Nothing deal breaking, but just a few things to hold off on marriage for a little bit. The biggest thing was that she wasn't sure if he could protect her.  And the only reason she thought that, was because he doesn't know how to shoot!

Ok, I admit I laughed at that one. That was sole deciding factor? That he just can't shoot a gun? But oh well, if that's the reason she wants to hold off on marriage, then more power to her!

* I don't really believe in "the one" or any other of those 'when you know you know' one true love mantras.  Yeah it's nice for fairy tales, but real life happens.
**I really was. At 20 I totally knew my boyfriend at the time was the one, I would have an engagement ring from Tiffany's at my final crit, and we were going to get married the fall after we graduated. And he did end up proposing right after graduation, to the girl he broke up with me for by the time we were 21.  No, I'm not bitter***
*** Of course I was bitter!  I was something like 22 at the time. But thank god my life didn't work out as I planned it would when I was 20.  I mean, it's been almost 10 years since we dated, they're still together and as far as I know happy, (we didn't keep in touch for obvious reasons) and I have dr soc who I love more than anything in the world. I'd say it worked out well for everyone.

Princess

Mike forwarded a coworker who couldn't make it to the wedding the slide show our photographer put together. (BTW, my photographer ROCKS. She not only did she have the slide show of photos edited, she also had all our proofs up in less than a week!).  The coworker had her 3 year old daughter with her that day and when she (the 3 year old) saw the pictures, she called me a "pretty princess."

Which is awesome. Because princess, especially from a 3-year-old, is pretty much the highest praise you can get!

Too Pretty

Ok, so I'm not tardy to the party or anything, but I'm 5 weeks from my wedding and haven't had time to snark about this until now. The writer who whined about being too beautiful.  Due to her ravishing looks, she's constantly spoiled by unwanted attention and lavish gifts of champagne and caviar that she never asks for, she's never been a bridesmaid, and women won't eave their husbands' sides if she's in the room. And not surprisingly, she doesn't have any female friends.

First: never trust a woman without girlfriends.
Second: to no one's surprise (except maybe her's) the reactions weren't met with any sympathy. And not only was there no sympathy, there was some, shall we say, backlash.

I am under no delusions that I am an attractive woman.  But I have not been showered with unwanted gifts of champagne and caviar, (first, because a gift of champagne is always a welcome gift in my world. Caviar though, I'll pass) nor am I constantly being burdened with upgrades to first class plane tickets. (the only time I have ever consciously gotten the pretty girl discount, was when my $3 and something left on my uk plus account was enough for the $6 something I needed for a pair of replacement lab goggles the one time I forgot them before chemistry lab.)  But you don't see me "complaining" about it like this brittish chick.

It's dirty common knowledge that pretty people sometimes have it a little easier in some areas. But no one want to have that acknowledged. So all she was doing was rubbing the not so pretty people's faces in it it seemed. And pretty doesn't make you a better person. But I guess it doesn't matter if you're ugly (or just less than beautiful) on the inside, because the pretty shell seems to be all you need anyway.

Plain Jane

me: (reading the title of an "article") can 'plain' women have a chance with guys? --snort-- of course they do. Guys will eventually marry them, but they just won't date them.
mike: What?
me: It's just along the same lines as guys date blonds, but marry brunettes
mike: What?
me: Yeah, when you men folk are dating, you don't want anything serious. So you go for the blonds because they're prettier aren't serious have more fun. Then when you want to get married and settle down, you go for the brunettes who are boring and clearly not as pretty, but stable. Better for the long term.
mike: I see.
me: I don't know where redheads fit into that though. They get left out of everything I guess.

Logic

I look young.  I'm used to peoples' initial shock, but most people don't care that much and move on to other more important things.  Other people, it blows thier 'effing mind.  So they keep harping on how young I look.  And that's when I tend to get a little annoyed and/or snarky.
Like I was to one of my coworkers. He sits across for me during a break and opens with:

dude: So, I'm, like, still trying to figure out how you're 29.
me: I was born in 1982. That's how.

Botulism

It is summer here in the Carolinas, and it is hot.  But since I prefer warmer weather to cold, I'm not going to bitch about the temperature.  Because it is so hot though, I sweat a lot.  I wear an antiperspirant/deodorant, but they only do so much in this kind of heat.  Plus, after a while, the smell of the deodorant itself starts to bother me and I need to go a day or two without.  It's better for your skin if you skip a day as well, so as long as I'm not going anywhere, everything's copacetic.

This really isn't that big a deal except that I'm getting married (squee!) at potentially hot time next year, and one of the last things I want to be worried about on my wedding day is to be sweating so bad that I stain my dress.  And I'm also incredibly vain.  So I was pretty intrigued when I heard that you can put botox in key places to control/stop sweating temporarily...

But when I casually mention this to my ex and almost sister-in-law as something I'm considering, they think it's a stupid idea, join forces to gang up on me and start making fun of me for that idea.  Not to be deterred, I decided they clealry didn't understand the importance of this and I would take pivotal things like this to my family and inner circle.  Because when I told my sister the same idea, her reaction was: the same as mine, intrigue and oooh we should do that.  See, that's what I'm talking about.  But I didn't marry the ex, and my neither my sister or I ended up getting botox for her wedding a few months later.  So I just tucked the idea of temporary botulism away for a while.

Of course I think about it again this wedding.  Of course I do.  I mentioned it to dr soc and he thinks it's a terrible idea.  (Clearly I do not.)  However, my sister told me that clinical strength antiperspirant works well if you apply it right, so I've decided to give that a try and not look into the botox thing after all.  But don't worry, I shifted my crazy beauty bridal thing from botox to eyelash extensions!  (Not to mention a full body wax and maybe a spray tan if I'm not able to get enough sun pre-wedding.  Oh don't judge me.  I am vain.)

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

This was how long my hair was at noon today:

Long and healthy.  It's been growing out since January 2009.
And this is what it looks like now!
Cute and summery and swishy!
I lopped off  10 inches and plan to donate it.  This will be my 3rd time doing so.  Now my only question is should I donate it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths or Locks of Love?  Sick kids or sick women?  Tough call.
Well, I think I'll go with Pantene this time like I planned and then next time I'll give to Locks of Love.
Swish!

Earth Science

Dr soc and I were taking the dogs for a walk and had the following conversation.

me: Since I'm running so much right now I'm not bothering to keep my feet really pretty. I'm taking care of them, but there's really no point in doing my nails this moment.
dr soc: What do you mean taking care of them?
me: Girly things. What I really need is a pumice stone to help with the rough patches. I had one at home but I didn't bring it with me in the move. I can get one no problem, but I just haven't gotten around to it.
dr soc: What's a pumice stone?
me: Its a stone you use to soften and scrub rough skin. I think it's hardened lava or something to that affect.
dr soc: Molten lava?
me: I guess.
dr soc: Hey, you know what I heard in that? Sarah wants a volcano!

What am I? Chopped Liver?

Being a bartender ups your hot points. But when I bartended at a restaurant in town, I wasn't in the running of viable crushable girls. It was common knowledge that I had an out of town boyfriend (though many coworkers thought he didn't exist because he never came to visit me. I-75 only ran one way didn't you know?), so I was more buddy-buddy then evil-woman-threat at this job. Which was a nice change of pace from my last bartending job (I was a pretty girl behind the bar, clearly I was going to steal everyone's husband/boyfriend). Well anyway, our black polyester shirts and non-slip shoes weren't the most becoming outfits. And I'm off the market anyway, so why did it matter if anyway? I barely gave it a thought. Until my sister came to visit me at work.

I was in the back getting something when she first showed up, and my manager happened to see her first at the bar through the crowds of people. Being a sucker for pretty girls, he approached her (of course) and asked if he could do anything for her. And when she said she was waiting for someone, he knew immediately that it was me, and this was my sister. And being the gossip that he is, soon the whole restaurant staff knew my sister was visiting, and she's HOT!

Suddenly, every male coworker had a drink order or needed something from the bar. Some even just came to say "hi." Uh huh. I got more hellos in a half hour then I had the entire month we had all been working there it seemed. Yes my sister is hot. She knows this. She looks great because we were blessed with the same type metabolism, but she also has a ridiculous work ethic and takes a lot of pride in her athletic capabilities. After she left to do some Christmas shopping, the adoration really started flowing. And I was jealous. Very, very jealous.

I agreed with the first "hey Sarah, hot sister." I agreed with the 2nd. And 3rd, and 4th. But by the 5th in a 10 minute time frame, I was annoyed. So when the manager told me the 800th same thing, I reacted like a very jealous female (much like my former coworkers actually) and snapped out: she's underage!

Which promptly shut everyone up.

It wasn't true, and they called my bluff when they realized I had been serving her at the bar. I sighed and admitted she's 21. "But she's almost engaged, lives in DC and off limits. Besides, she's out of your league anyway." And with that I stalked off and finished my shift.

Sigh, I know I was a coworker which maybe made me even more off limits than my sister, but I guess how many people stopped by to say hi after she left? Yeah. Thanks guys. Lot of good my bartender hot points got me.

Piggy Tails

Pigtails are my preferred workout hair style. For several reasons:
  1. My hair is not quite long enough to fit into one ponytail.
  2. When I do put it in a ponytail, my hair doesn't stay in the band.
  3. So if I'm doing any sort of floor work, pilates, yoga, and always stretching, no matter where the ponytail that is not holding all of my hair is, gets in the way because it's awkward to lay on.
To remedy this, (if I have time), I put my hair in pigtails. And this works because:
  1. My hair stays in the bands.
  2. They don't get in the way of floor work.
  3. And they're super cute.

Now if only the guys would stop giving me skeevy looks at the gym...

I don't get checked out/noticed unless I wear pigtails. Despite what my hairstyle makes you think boy, s'aint happening. Move along and lets finish out work outs like adults (says the girl with the childish hairstyle).

Sharing is Caring

Except for the bathroom that is. I'm not very good at sharing one. Or germs, those aren't nice things to give other people either. I'm pretty good at sharing those though.

But the bathroom, if it starts as my bathroom I'm not good at sharing it. Because I've shared a bathroom most of my life until the past year. I shared one with my sister growing up, (and yep we fought over it) with roommates in college (8 people, 2 baths, you do the math), and a boy in a one bathroom apartment (though he used all my stuff, so really, it was pretty much mine with the addition of aftershave). But since I've been home, I don't have to share the bathroom with anyone!

Since I didn't really know what it like to not share one, I didn't realize how much I like having my own bathroom until recently and I had to share with company. And now, I'm all, it's my place my place! If I ever end up living with another guy, I think it would be a wise investment to get place with 2 bathrooms. Otherwise I will take over the whole thing like I did before and he might get a drawer (if we have multiple ones to share that is).

And I also didn't realize how much I love counter space in the bathroom until I lived with a boy. When ex-y and I were searching for our 2nd apartment, I made us look at a converted warehouse. Anyway, I see the bathroom and there's a long counter top that runs along the entire wall. (though all the apartments in the building we saw, the layouts were odd and a little cramped. Not great space planning. It was really going for the hipster-esq cool urban living feel. Except that Cincinnati (Camp Washington) urban living isn't quite there yet. Nor is it the safest feeling in the world). But going from a tiny sink to a 10 foot counter top (10' for one sink? Like I said, poorly laid out), I fell in love with that Formica plane of space.

I gleefully said: "oh! Look at all that counter space! God we need that."

Ex: "we don't need counter space in the bathroom."

The realtor (or whatever) and I exchange a knowing look and I say: "Ok honey, let's put it this way: I need counter space."

He opened his mouth to say something else, took a look at my don't-argue-with-me-face, shook his head and said: "Oh. Then I get the little study area for my music stuff."

"Sure honey" I just didn't tell him the little study area was also going to be used for the computer, my books, the growing pile of wedding crap/info and the rest of junk we didn't have space for.

eight six seven five three oh nine

(names have been changed to protect the hot)

My name has been on a bathroom wall. Uh huh. And I'm actually kinda proud of that.

First, it's not as dirty as you're thinking. My freshman year toward the end spring quarter, we learned that in one of the guys' bathroom stalls, there was a list of the hottest girls of the entire freshman studio (130 people maybe?).

The whole thing started for German Nadja: blond hair, blue eyes, tall, slender, perfect ass, boobs that defied gravity, and a German accent. And a good designer. Because she wasn't perfect enough. But since none of the freshman guys actually had a chance with her, the list was expanded to include all the girls across the 6 studios. There were 9 out of about 75 girls on that list. And yours truly was number 9.

Four of the nine were from my studio, so I had some pretty stiff competition in my house. And since the whole thing started for German Nadja, she was obviously number 1. But we had the 2nd, 3rd, 8th and 9th spot on that list. We could have had the 10th spot too if there had been one, but the guy mainly "in charge" of the list (from my studio) was deliberately freezing out another girl because they had messed around earlier in the year. This may be the reason we had so many girls from our studio too...

So anyway, I'm proud in a way of sorts for being on the list, but I'm also a little: hey, why am I last? I was at least equal with number 8. And the only reason number 5 was on there was because she never wore a bra.

Upkeep

Now first, let me say that it is summer and I would be shaving anyway. My penchant for open toes shoes keeps my toes polished. My love of sunglasses is what prompts me to put in my contacts. And I'm trying to keep in shape to run a 6k in July. But I will fully admit that I wouldn't be as meticulous as I have been with the upkeep if I wasn't dating someone.

I know at times I've gone to work with my hair hastily thrown in a pony tail and little makeup. And honestly, I still do that on days I know I won't see library guy. But I don't mind really, I've always liked getting pretty and taking a little time to fix myself up. But there's one area that I absolutely credit to dating someone. I sure as hell didn't care if I was wearing cute underpinnings a few months ago.

Haute Couture

I do not claim to be a fashionistia. I can don a fabulous dress like anyone else and I can pull together a look on my own. I tend to stick with classics because they are timeless and it's hard to mess those up. But styling myself isn't my strongest suit. I can usually tell when something is wrong with an outfit, but I can't tell what exactly is wrong (examples: the fabrics don't match, coloring's off, wrong shoes...) or how to fix it. I seriously miss my old roomie because she would tell me exactly what was wrong and how to fix it. Once I walked out of my room, she took one look at me and said "No" and did the turn around sign thing with her finger. Bitchy, yes but I appreciated that she didn't want me leaving the house badly/inappropriately dressed.

But even I know this: socks with crocs? NO

PS: '94 called, it wants it's flannel back

Sister Size

I'm somewhat an odd bust size, so I buy the sister size because it's a lot more common. Things weren't fitting quite as well the past few months, so I figured I had dropped both a band and cup size. I was in the mall the other day, and I decided to get refitted so I could shop more efficiently the semi annual sale (which starts June 16 btw).
Side note: I shop to conquer sale time. I will snatch things out from under you if I want it.

Remember when I said no one would feel sorry for me because my "skinny jeans" didn't fit anymore? And that my chest was a little smaller (cries)? And the other day I wanted to say I'm skinny because I earned it? Irony, apparently, had made me it's bitch. Because I did slim down everywhere. Except there. I did loose a band size, but...umm not so much the other part.

Since I can hold a grudge for-ev-er (I may have no idea why I'm mad at some people, but dammit, I was mad at some point and I'm going to stay that way! (hmm, this doesn't sound healthy...)), here's a little smirk in a particular direction.

Women are bitches

There was a conversation going on around me between 3 women about their weight. The topic of ideal weight came up, but how it's not truly realistic because idea weight doesn't account for frame shape. I was keeping my mouth shut all the same. And then they segue-wayed into their problem areas. One woman started talking about some of the exercises her trainer had her do for her triceps, and that they were a somewhat weird position. I piped in here with a: I do a couple of these (and then demonstrated) to tone mine up a little bit.

Before I finished the word tone, she cut me off and said I wasn't allowed to be a part of this conversation (being the skinny person that I am was heavily implied). It was said with a joking tone, but I think we all know it wasn't. And what's worse, is that even before I opened my mouth, I knew I should have clamped it shut. I blushed and looked down, embarrassed for being thin (and curvy in the right areas too). But then I started to silently seethe. Because here's what I wish I had snapped back at her:

I look this way because I have earned every pound I've lost. Physically and mentally I earned it. You want to train for a half marathon, then go for it. You want to break your engagement and stop eating, then go ahead. When you are so depressed you consider ending your life, (December was a bad month for me) and then decide that living, and doing it healthily is a better option, go for it.

I get to be skinny
because I fcking earned it.

Why No One Will Ever Feel Sorry for Me

I have a certain pair of jeans that I refer to as my "skinny jeans." While they aren't my smallest pair, I look bloody fantastic in them. I feel like a super model when I put them on. My legs go on for miles, they hug all the right curves and hang in the right places, they have just the right amount of stretch, and the back pockets accentuate in the right way. Bloody. Fantastic. I f*cking love these jeans.

But when I started running I slimmed down a little bit. And I lost even more weight because of the break up. (I'm one of those bitches whose appetite goes when I'm sick or depressed, making me even thinner). So over the past year, I've probably dropped around 5-10 pounds (even my chest is smaller (cries!)), and I've kept it off.

So now my skinny jeans, that I look like a super model in? Are too big.
Right. Like anyone's ever going to feel sorry for me for that.
